Title | Towards Climate Smart Utilities: Inspiring Climate Action from Utilities Worldwide |
Objective(s) | 1. To present the IWA Climate Smart Initiative, featuring actions taken by utilities from different geographies and socio-economic realities on three interconnected topics: adaptation, mitigation, and leadership |
Abstract | The emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere is one of the greatest sources of pollution of our current time. Apart from local effects – such as high levels of atmospheric pollution in cities and industrialized areas – the effects of this pollution are borne by all human beings and the natural environment through changes in the global climate. Also, the capacity of urban water management (utilities) to deliver safe water, protect rivers and oceans, as well as protect people and assets from flooding, in alignment with the SDGs is under a serious threat. The session will highlight the value the International Water Association is providing to utilities and the wider professional community (water, wastewater, and urban drainage companies) to inspire improvements of their climate resilience by adapting to a changing climate while contributing to significant and sustainable reduction of carbon emissions. |
