What happens after the floodwater recedes, the landslides stop making news, and people are left to live with the cracks?
This presentation reflects on Between One Rain and the Next, a 23-minute documentary filmed with mountain communities in Mandi and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh, in the Indian Himalayan Region. The film grew out of qualitative fieldwork on climate change, mental well-being and everyday life. Its objective is to make visible how repeated climate extremes and landscape instability shape mental well-being, care, livelihoods and future-making, while placing lived experience in dialogue with scientific and environmental knowledge.
Rather than treating disaster as a single event, the documentary stays with what comes after. It listens to people who continue to cook, care, rebuild, wait, remember and worry. A young entrepreneur speaks about a business still standing, but cut off from customers. Women describe cracked homes, tents, disrupted water and food, and sleepless nights. Older residents recall mountains and seasons that once felt more familiar. Scientific and environmental voices help explain slope instability, changing rainfall, development pressures and known risks.
The film shows that climate uncertainty is not only about damaged roads, homes or landscapes. It also enters the body, the household and the imagination of the future. Homes become unsafe. Livelihoods pause. Sleep is disturbed. Decisions become harder.
At its centre, the film is about people trying to hold on to dignity, care and hope in a landscape that no longer feels predictable. It asks us to look beyond disaster as spectacle, and to listen to life between one rain and the next.
