Session 2 – “Water-Energy-Food Security Nexus”

The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus has become popular in recent sustainability strategies and research. This is evident in numerous reports, scientific papers and global and regional conferences (World Economic Forum in 2011, Bonn WEF Conference in 2011, World Water Forum, the Rio+20 Conference in 2012, the World Water Week 2014 as well as many science-driven conferences in the same period in Bonn). Many scholars have recognized the Nexus as an innovation and a promising approach. The innovative aspect of the Nexus is that it shifts attention from the one-sector view to a more balanced view of issues linking the three resources and related sectors. In recent years, many integrated approaches to analyse the resource interactions within the Nexus have been developed. Although such approaches have been applied to a large number of case studies explaining the conflicts among resources and suggesting solutions towards its resolution, there is still a need to develop and apply methodologies to quantify the fluxes and relationships between the three elements.

This session aims at presenting recent initiatives related to an improved Nexus dialogue between the sectors and discuss possible approaches how to quantify and overcome Nexus related conflicts and trade-offs.
